Masters Athletics 2010

SCVAC Indoor Championships, Pickett’s Lock, 14 February 2010

This can be a championships with world class fields, provided all the athletes entered actually turn up. This was a problem this year, and small fields for several events fitted badly into a very drawn-out timetable for the day. I raced, though on the back of very little speed work, and it showed.

The Brits go to the Belgian Masters, Ghent, 13 March 2010

A brilliant little trip. Ghent will host the European Masters Indoors in a year’s time, and the trip gave us a chance to race in the excellent indoor stadium, suss out hotels etc—oh and to take part in a really good championships as well. Two world age group records that day, though none from the 60 or so GB athletes there.

World Masters, Indoors, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada, March 2010

I was not well enough to attend this event, so I have no photographs from it. Sorry.

BMAF British Masters Indoor Championships,
Lee Valley Saturday 27 March and Sunday 28 March 2010

I was ill, and unable to compete myself. I found I was the only photographer there on the Saturday (so you won’t get any photos anywhere else, folks!), which made for a day that was every bit as hard as racing. A great weekend, which saw three world age group records, and any number of National age group records set.

Southern Counties Masters Championships,
Ashford 5 June 2010

Again, apologies. I raced in the 100m, but fell and badly broke my right thumb at the end of the race, so I was in Casualty for the rest of the day. No photos, therefore.

BMAF British Masters Track & Field Championships,
Cardiff,  Saturday 3 July and Sunday and 4 July 2010

A new venue, one day of great weather, and two days of strong headwinds! For myself, a successful return to competition with a bronze medal, after a long period of illness, injury and recuperation. The galleries here are but a selection of the total number of photos I took over the weekend. It was busy!

Masters Inter-Area Match, Solihull,
Sunday 8 August 2010 2010

Another in my succession of bad days. Hurt my right foot in the 100m, and ended the day strapped up and limping. Nice chance to shoot some candid portraits, rather than all action shots. Lots of medley relay change-over pictures too.

The Jim Day Memorial Pole Vault Competition 2010
Norman Park, Bromley, Sunday 26 September

Not a Masters event, but an annual memorial to one of the finest Masters pole-vaulters ever, and a good friend of mine for very many years. A brilliant event, organized by Allan Williams and Team Polestar. More than 80 vaulters of all ages entered. The weather was unkind, with the final competition finishing in the dark and the rain!
